In motion

For the last few weeks I have occasionally seen skaters outside my parking garage at night. These guys seem to be having a pretty good time.

In the left center portion of the photo you can just make out the dark blur of one of the skaters jumping.

The surprise — although I suppose it shouldn’t have been — is that they were also sneaking into the garage and riding down the six-story ramp. I couldn’t get an action shot of that, probably because they knew I was still in the garage, and didn’t want to get run down.

This photo leaves off the top level of the ramp because I was standing on it. The A/C unit is surrounded by a 10′ iron fence topped with serious spikes.

It’s a bit of a sad commentary, I guess, that at 8:00pm the downtown streets are dead enough to allow unimpeded skating, but I’m sure that will change, someday.

Did these guys have their own little guerrilla camera and film crew following them? I only ask because a group of skaters took over the challenger monument at Bayfront the other day. It’s the white helix thing with a flat triangular stone set at downward slope to its base, directly across from the Citibank building. They were taking turns jumping off the base and landing grinds on the triangle. After about twenty minutes they packed up and lit out for another spot before security could get police to respond.

It was fun to watch, but I was kicking myself for neglecting to put the memory card back in my camera that morning.

The first time I saw them I was looking for a film crew of some sort, but I haven’t seen one yet.

They’re always around Bayfront park when I leave work. And in my building too, jumping off the stairs on Biscayne…

They also like the Suntrust building near Lincoln Road.

That looks scary, what with the spikes! Hope you will not find impaled skater any time soon.
