Rituals

Against all logic (and in spite of the best efforts of Miami’s maniac pre-dawn drivers) I managed to get out of bed and to the beach in time to watch the sunrise. Once again the effort has paid off in renewed energy; sadly, it isn’t renewed enough to overcome my dragged out of bed at 5:00am fatigue.

Three compatriots also met up with me, but I will let them remain anonymous unless they want to reveal themselves in the comments. After taking some pictures and chatting for a while, we retired to the soon-to-be demolished Rascal House for huge plates of food and lively conversation. Happily, the corned beef hash was every bit as good as I remembered. Given that they are going to shut down, I wonder if they’d be willing to part with the recipe?

All in all, a good start to 2007. May you all have new years filled with health, contentment, and marvels.

MKH:

You note as an aside that parts of Hidden City are “gone forever.” You will be pleased to learn that this is not the case.

Sounds like a good start to 2007, Kevin. Here’s wishing you a great year.

I have one more Happy New Year wish left in today’s allotment and you have been chosen as its new owner! Best to you and yours this year and always.

So cool. I thought briefly last night of surprising y’all at Haulover, but the only reason you’d ever find me up that early is if I hadn’t been to sleep yet. I admire your (collective) fortitude.

Happy New Year!

That’s an awfully pretty sunrise. It’s too cold to do that here. Maybe I should travel south for the next new year.

Corn Beef rules! :-)

I had seriously considered driving down to share the sunrise with you this year, but we had last minute guests for new years and sort of felt like maybe we should be home.

So, are we going to make another attempt to be at the same geographic location at the same temporal point this year? It’s only been — what — 5 years of missed connections?

Comment catch-up time.

Manuel: Yes, I’m familiar with archive.org. Unfortunately, the completeness of the archive tracks the popularity of the site regrettably closely, so while HC is well-represented, there are still missing gaps. (I was talking about a conscious choice to not go to the trouble of reformatting those pages, anyway.)

Manola: Yes, a good corned beef hash is a great way to start the year. Unless, I suppose, you are a vegetarian or vegan (or Hindi, or have high blood pressure or clogged arteries…).

Rick, MJ, Yvette, kaydee, and Sherri: The happiest of new years to you all! Feel free to join us on the beach next year!

Oh, and Jen: I thought you were scared of Miami or something? ;-)

James Burnett January 3, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Beautiful. I’m sorry I didn’t make it. I was in more pain that morning after a night covering knuckleheads on SoBe than I thought I would be.

Here’s hoping to a less head-throbbing start to 2008, then, James.

Jen January 6, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Eh, it’s the palmetto bugs that scare me, not Miami itself. :P
